Calligraphy studies is a journey of two people, the student and the master. The relationship between those two is crucial. A good teacher will pass the knowledge he or she has gathered throughout the years of studies and research of a given subject. A great teacher will also manage to share the passion. A true master will will wish for the student to acheive a greater mastery than his own.
At Esshuu Shoin you will learn calligraphy the way it has been passed on from masters to students throughout millennia, by means of copying ancient manuscripts and gaining knowledge on calligraphic scripts, specialised vocabulary, as well as the history of this remarkable art.
The atmosphere during classes is educational, personal, but also relaxed and comfortable. Learning calligraphy should be like a grip on the brush: firm as the one of a swordsman, to deliver a steady line confidence, yet flexible enough, as moves of a skilled dancer, to allow the energy to flow freely within one's work.
Please note, that classes in Greater Tokyo area are held in Japanese. Kindly direct any inquiries in English here.
